Grasberg copper concentrate output fell sharply to the largest variable of global copper supply in 2019

Jan. 9, an official from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources said Wednesday that exports of copper concentrates from the Grasberg project in Indonesia are expected to fall to 200,000 tons in 2019 and about 1.2 million tons in 2018.

The Grasberg project in Indonesia is the second largest copper mine in the world.

The decline in exports may be attributed to the anticipated reduction in copper concentrate production in the Grasberg project. The production and operation of the project is under the responsibility of Freeport Copper and Gold Mine Company of the United States, which belongs to Indonesian state-owned miner PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium.

Yunus Saefulhak, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of Indonesia, said: "The copper concentrate production of the project will decline in 2019 due to the conversion of open-pit mining to underground mining."

Saefulhak added that this year, the Grasberg copper concentrate production is expected to reach about 1.2 million tons, compared with 2.1 million tons in 2018, while Indonesia's domestic consumption will increase from 800,000 tons last year to 1 million tons.

He said that the average daily copper ore output of the Grasberg project in 2018 was 270,000 tons.
